The fact that Exegistics is a veteran-owned business was a major selling point for Chris Alcorn, now General Manager at the company. Alcorn met Exegistics founder and CEO, Stephen Olds, at a job fair as he was nearing retirement after serving 20 years in the U.S. Army.

“You get used to a certain way of life in the military,” said Alcorn. “That type of environment, that camaraderie, you don’t typically find it in civilian jobs. But that’s what came across from Exegistics.”

When Alcorn retired from the Army in 2013, Exegistics didn’t have any openings, so he took a job at another company. Nine months later, Olds got back in touch and offered him a position. Alcorn said the culture at Exegistics sets it apart from other companies.

“For other businesses, you’re just an employee,” said Alcorn. “But here, the CEO takes the time to get to know you personally. When you see Stephen, he isn’t just straight to business; he wants to know how you’re doing, he asks about your family. And when the person at the top sets that example, it trickles down into the rest of the company. Others underneath him do the same, and all employees feel like valued members of the team.”

While in the Army, Alcorn was a senior maintenance supervisor, planning, coordinating, and directing diverse programs. He credits his time in the military with honing valuable hard and soft skills.

“I had a lot of different roles and titles along the way where I built up my management experience,” he said. “I developed a strong work ethic and an ability to prioritize and solve problems.”

Alcorn now applies these capabilities to his work at Exegistics. At the warehousing facility, he manages a team of employees and the delivery, offloading, storing, and shipments of industrial steel components – with around 9 million pounds of steel in the warehouse at any given time. Alcorn’s organizational and time management skills help keep Exegistics operations running smoothly.
