Developing an effective workforce staffing strategy for your company is a major undertaking. It requires you to step back from your busy day-to-day responsibilities and look at the big picture, using data to understand your staffing challenges and come up with long-term solutions for them.

Once you have put a successful staffing strategy in place, you deserve to celebrate your progress. But your work doesn’t end there. You must continue to assess and adjust your plan over time to ensure it is still addressing your company’s pain points and helping you make positive changes.

“It’s important to evaluate your staffing strategy in an ongoing way,” said Director of Staffing Solutions for Exegistics, Chris Randich. “You can’t just set up a plan, leave it alone, and expect it to keep working for you. We recommend tracking and analyzing key performance indicators continuously. If something is useful, keep doing it. If it isn’t, change it or find an alternative.”

Evaluating Your Company’s KPIs

  • Be specific: Every company has its own distinct key performance indicators. Make sure yours are clearly defined by envisioning staffing success. What does that require? Lowering rates of absenteeism and turnover? Closing skill gaps and expanding training programs? Identify your KPIs, and set a regular time to check in on them throughout each quarter.
  • Search for deeper insights: When assessing your staffing strategy, it can be tempting to look at the numbers and stop there. But data is only as useful as the insights you draw from it. Examine your KPIs with a goal of understanding your workforce on a deeper level. How is your staff operating overall? What is working and what is not? What are common obstacles or problems? How could you adjust your strategy to better motivate, train, or retain your staff?
  • Leave room for culture: Key performance indicators give you a valuable starting point to evaluate your staffing strategy –  yet they don’t always take company culture into account. Think about the kind of culture you want to create within your organization and how it will foster your ideal workforce. What processes or systems do you need to encourage this culture? What are you already doing that is working? How could you do more? Be intentional about building a company in which employees can thrive.
